Teen Skin Care

Acne is common in teens. There are multiple options for treatments. Treatments only work if you are motivated enough to use a treatment daily. Typically it takes 4-6 weeks to see results.

  • If you have clear skin wash once or twice a day with a gentle cleanser like Cetaphil. Use a moisturizer such as Eucerin or Oil of Olay.
  • If you have mild acne:
    • Wash 2x daily with a gentle cleanser with salicyclic acid such as Neutrogena Oil-Free Acne Wash Cream Cleanser.
    • Moisturize after cleansing with gentle lotion such as Clean and Clear Dual Action Moisurizer or Neutrogena Oil Free Acne Moisturizer.
    • Wait 15 minutes.
    • Apply Differin gel which is adapalene. This used to be prescription only but is now available over the counter . It is related to retin-A but causes less irritation. Start with a half-a-pea-sized amount. Another option is prescription BenzClin which some insurances will not cover.
  • Moderate Acne
    • Wash face 2x daily with 2.5% benzoyl peroxide such as Acne Free Oil Free Acne Cleanser.
    • Moisturize as above.
    • Wait 15 minutes.
